The Winter 2018 edition of Churchman marks the end of an era. As Andrew Atherstone, Chair of the Editorial Board, writes:
After 35 years as the editor of Churchman, Professor Gerald Bray retires from the role at the end of 2018. We are very sorry to see Gerald hang up his boots, after sterling service over half a lifetime and nearly 140 entertaining, provocative, stimulating editorials. Over the decades he has established Churchman as the leading international journal for Anglican Evangelical theology, and we owe him a huge debt. Gerald continues to teach across the globe, and to publish at a prodigious rate. Keep your eyes open for his forthcoming books, including Doing Theology with the Reformers, and a theological commentary on the Pastoral Epistles. In his honour, Church Society has launched the annual Gerald Bray Essay Prize, to encourage first-time authors to write good theology, and the winning essays will be published in Churchman.
We are delighted to announce that the new editor of Churchman from January 2019 is Peter Jensen, well-known to many as a global Anglican Evangelical statesman. He has served as Principal of Moore Theological College, Archbishop of Sydney, and most recently from 2008 to 2018 as the first General Secretary of the GAFCON movement. We look forward to Peter’s leadership of Churchman, as the journal goes from strength to strength, especially in providing robust Evangelical theology to resource Anglican churches in the UK and across the world. We hope you enjoy the current issue, which opens with Gerald’s valedictory.
This issue includes, as well as Gerald’s editorial, “God is Love”, articles in the fields of historical theology, theology and biblical studies, as well as the usual wide range of book reviews. Lok-Ping Ng writes on “Nature in the Thought of John Calvin”; Cheryl Ritskes offers “A Defence of Penal Substitutionary Atonement and Divine Justice”; Allan Baird looks at “The Role of Holiness in 1 Corinthians”; and Donald S. West asks, “How Is Jesus’ Cry from the Cross in Mark 15:34 Answered?”
Books reviewed include two new commentaries on Mark’s gospel, two new biographies of Luther, a collection of short writings by Dietriech Bonhoeffer, a guide to pastoral visiting, Karen Jobes’ commentary on John’s letters, N.T. Wright’s latest volume on Paul, a look at evangelical ethics, and many, many more.
