Abstract:
The 500th anniversary of the Reformation is spurring renewed interest in Martin Luther and other Reformers. Luther’s contribution to education is often overlooked, but this article argues that the importance of providing good schools and a quality education was a key part of Luther’s Reformation agenda.
Beckham highlights an aspect of Luther’s legacy which is not widely known. He makes a strong case for Luther’s commitment to education, and more specifically to educational reform. Luther believed in education for laity as well as clergy, for people from all social classes, and for women as well as men. Beckham lays down a challenge to evangelicals to read and learn from Luther on this subject about which he was so concerned.
